Occupational Health
and Safety
The School of EE&T is subject to the UNSW OH&S Regulations. The School has an Occupational Health & Safety Committee which meets regularly to consider the safety aspects of the School in all of its activities, including teaching and research and associated operations, administration and any other activities that may occur within the School. The committee is responsible for performing risk assessments of all of the School activities listed above. It also is responsible for disseminating any safety related material that is issued by the University OH&S Office and for apprising School staff and students of any relevant safety matters that may arise within the School. The OH&S committee is the focal point for all safety matters within the School and any incidents related to safety should be notified to the Committee Chair, Dr. Iain Skinner. Any matters relating to safety issues should be notified to the Chair of the Committee in the first instance. Such matters might include the following:
There are a number of training videos and DVDs available through the Electronics Workshop, Room G15. Undergraduate students will be given safety lectures and practical demonstrations of laboratory safety before they start their laboratory work. This will normally be in the first weeks of session 1 of their first year in the programs run by the School of EE&T. Postgraduate research students and staff have available to them various safety courses that are conducted each year from time to time. It will be necessary for all research students to attend the appropriate safety courses. They will be notified of these courses as they arise. Please see the relevant training section of the Faculty OHS website. There will be, on occasions, emergency drills run in the School and when these occur it is imperative that all persons obey the directions of the appropriate Floor Wardens in the building. In the case of an evacuation of the building all personnel should evacuate the building and move to the closest assembly point outside the building. These will be indicated by the Floor Wardens. There are also emergency notices on each floor (near the lifts) and in most laboratories. These will provide information on contacts for help in the event of an accident. In particular they list the nearest first aid assistance in the School and the contact telephone number for security.
