OHS

The School of EE&T is subject to the UNSW OH&S policies & procedures and the relevant State & Federal OHS laws.

The School has an Occupational Health & Safety Committee which meets quarterly to consider the safety aspects of all the School's activities, including teaching, research, administration and any events that may occur within the School.

This OHS Committee is the focal point for all safety matters within the School and any incidents related to safety should be notified to the Committee's Chair, Dr Iain Skinner, or the School's OHS Officer, Zhenyu Liu. Such matters might include the following:

  • Potential hazards noticed within the School in any of its activities.
  • Any accidents which occur to you or to any other person-all such accidents should be reported, even those that appear to be relatively innocuous.
  • Advice on any new safety matters that may arise in new activities and that have not been dealt with before.

Hazards may also be reported directly on-line, via myUNSW.

PLEASE REPORT ALL HAZARDS

New undergraduate students receive lectures and practical demonstrations of laboratory safety before they commence laboratory work. This will normally occur in the first weeks of the first semester of their respective enrolment in courses run by the School of EE&T, and recur at intervals thereafter. The ELSOC President is a member of the OHS Committee and students may raise any concerns with the Presdent.

Postgraduate coursework students receive inductions specific to any coursework requirements involving laboratories.

Research students and staff are required to attend appropriate safety courses. Students and staff are notified of these courses as they arise. There are a number of courses which are obligatory for staff - please ensure you meet your obligations.

There are a number of training videos and DVDs available through the Electronics Workshop, Room G15.

Emergency evacuation drills are scheduled twice each year.  When these occur it is imperative that all persons in the building and its immediate environs obey the directions of the appropriate Floor Wardens. Everyone should evacuate the building and move to the closest assembly point outside the building: for the Elec Eng Building, this is usually the Quadrangle lawn.

There are emergency notices on each floor near the lifts and in most laboratories. These provide information on contacts for help in the event of an accident. In particular they list the nearest first aid assistance in the School and the contact telephone number for security.
